GROWS event proved a great success
South Gloucestershire and Stroud College, played host to 110 year 10 school children last week, as part of the GROWS (Gloucestershire Reaching out with Schools) initiative.
Held at the Berkeley Green Campus, the event included a motivational talk, presentations on Higher Education pathways and taster sessions. Each student attended two sessions, so that they could disseminate their experience back to their individual schools. The sessions on offer included: Engineering, Games Design, Computing and Cyber Security, Zoological Management, Special Effects Make-up, Media Production, Creative Arts, Illustration, Equine and Sport.
Jo Priest HE Co-ordinator commented: “SGS College is delighted to be part of this Partnership and to be able to hold our first outreach day at our new Berkeley Green Campus, which will accommodate our Engineering Department from 2016. This would have been the first time that many of these students would have attended a Higher Education event, where they had the opportunity to participate in taster events. The day would have helped broaden their knowledge of University Level Courses and the different routes available into Higher Education.”
The GROWS initiative is made up by National Networks for Collaborative Outreach (NNCO) scheme and aims to encourage more young people into higher education (HE). It brings together universities and further education colleges into local networks to provide coordinated outreach to schools and colleges. The scheme involves 200 universities and FECs and will reach 4,300 secondary schools and colleges through 34 local and 4 national networks. The Gloucestershire network consists of SGS College, the University of Gloucestershire, The Royal Agricultural University, Hartpury College, and Gloucestershire College. Each partner of the GROWs initiative is hosting their own day for a different school age group during the year.
