Duo start own business at only 18 years of age

Starting your own business is daunting at any age but two students from SGS College are taking their first step into the world of work by diving straight in at the top.

Billy Glyde and Abbi Skuse are no typical teenagers, at 18 they have both undergone courses in Painting and Decorating, starting at Level 1 and finishing with Apprenticeship Diploma’s at Level 2. Now with only one week to go left on their course they are embarking on the most exciting journey of their career so far, by starting a company from scratch.

The pair both wanted to do painting and decorating when they left school due to the hands on nature of the industry. Together they have been carrying out weekend jobs building their clientele whilst completing their apprenticeship at SGS. Most recently at college they have been redecorating the hair and beauty salons on site.

Abbi from Kingswood comments: “I used to help my mum and dad with the decorating and always really enjoyed it so I decided that was the career path I wanted to take. I really like the job; there is always something different and lots of different houses to work on. I love transforming a room and seeing the finished product.”

Billy from Westbury-on-Trym said: “It’s the before and after that I like to see, and the satisfaction that I am doing something which pleases others. Starting your own business is daunting but I have confidence in us both. Since January we have been working on weekends, slowing building up clients so I feel we have a great chance of succeeding.”
