Katie Bone

How long have you worked at SGS?

I have worked at SGS College for 8 years, initially as a lecturer and for the last 4 years as Head of Department for Health and Social Care.

What do you teach/specialise in?

I am Head of Department for Health and Social Care. I work across both the Filton and Stroud campuses. During my time at SGS College, student retention and achievement within the department has increased year on year and I am particularly proud that our learners have 100% success rate in securing university places and employment in the Health and Social Care Sector. 

What is the best thing about your job?

The best part of the job is being part of the students learning journey and watching them develop and then apply their skills and knowledge in placement.

Where did you work previously/doing what?

Prior to teaching I worked for ten years within social care, I am a qualified social worker.

Anything else you would like to include?

Alongside my Further Education role I teach on the Open University Social Work degree programme.


Maria Stadnicka

How long have you worked at SGS?

I have worked for South Gloucestershire and Stroud College for seven years.

What do you teach/specialise in?

I am the course leader for Health and Social Care level 3, academic tutor and peer practitioner. I have been involved in delivering courses at level 2, 3, 4, 5 and Access to Higher Education. I am specialised in teaching sociology, communication, ethical principle, values and research.

What is the best thing about your job?

I am privileged to teach every year great students and great people as well. I am actively involved in creative writing and I work with my students to encourage their independence, stimulate their creativity and develop their critical thinking, while I prepare them either for university life or for employment.

Where did you work previously/doing what?

Before SGS, I worked for 3 years as a Service Manager at Leonard Cheshire Disability and spent 6 years as Editor in Chief for Radio HIT News Department.

Anything else you would like to include?

I have a degree in Journalism and Communication Sciences and a MA in Sociology as well as a Post Graduate Certificate in Education and a Diploma level 4 in Leadership and Management.


Rachel Whitehouse

How long have you worked at SGS?

I have works at SGS College for 3 Years.

What do you teach/specialise in?

I teach on the Level 1 and Level 3 Health and Social Care courses. I am an academic tutor and specialise in teaching nutrition and psychology.

What is the best thing about your job?

The best part of my job is getting to know all of my students and helping them progress on to university or employment. I particularly enjoy that there mixture of the academic and practical assessment on the course. 

Where did you work previously/doing what?

Prior to teaching I was at university studying Sociology and then went on to do a PGCE.
