Katie Bone

How long have you worked at SGS?

I have worked at SGS College for 8 years, initially as a lecturer and for the last 4 years as Head of Department for Health and Social Care.

What do you teach/specialise in?

I am Head of Department for Health and Social Care. I work across both the Filton and Stroud campuses. During my time at SGS College, student retention and achievement within the department has increased year on year and I am particularly proud that our learners have 100% success rate in securing university places and employment in the Health and Social Care Sector. 

What is the best thing about your job?

The best part of the job is being part of the students learning journey and watching them develop and then apply their skills and knowledge in placement. 

Where did you work previously/doing what?

Prior to teaching I worked for ten years within social care, I am a qualified social worker.

Anything else you would like to include?

Alongside my Further Education role I teach on the Open University Social Work degree programme.

Sue Downes

How long have you worked at SGS?

I have been teaching Health and Social Care for 10 years.

What do you teach/specialise in?

My academic background is in psychology and I have a particular interest in understanding what makes people tick.

What is the best thing about your job?

I love visiting students at placement and seeing how their sometimes hidden talents are so plain to see when they are working alongside service users. 

Where did you work previously/doing what?

I'm a former care manager.

Anything else you would like to include?

On a personal level, my passions include cooking (especially with chocolate) and jumping into other exciting worlds via my Kindle.

Liz Garnham-Moore

How long have you worked at SGS?

I have been working in the H&SC department at SGS College for 9 years and I have been privileged to work with some amazing young people. 

What do you teach/specialise in?

I have taught Level 1, 2 and 3 and been Course Leader for the Level 1 programme for 8 years. 

What is the best thing about your job?

The level 1 programme is really successful and I am very proud of the excellent results and achievements we have achieved over the years.  I have established some excellent links within the community and take our students on lots of excellent vocationally relevant trips which really enrich their learning experience.

Where did you work previously/doing what?

My academic background is in Cultural Studies and Sociology and prior to working at SGS College I did a PGCE at UWE and did a placement year at Gloscat College in Cheltenham. 

Anything else you would like to include?

Each year I raise money for the fantastic Children’s Hospice South West with the level 1 learners.  We always have great fun and have taken part in lots of different fundraising activities.
