Course Detail

Level 3 Public Services (Protective/Unformed)

Full time course

This A-level equivalent qualification is designed to supply learners with the necessary skills and knowledge required to progress into higher education.

What will I study?

Modules covered may include public service skills, improving health and fitness, land navigation and expedition skills.

Maths & English

As part of the programme, learners will undertake Maths and English Language GCSE qualifications to work towards achieving GCSE grade 4 (grade C) in both by the end of the course. Opportunities to upskill in both Maths and English will be provided and feedback given to learners on areas of strength as well as areas for improvement.

Employability plays an important role in this programme and the course units are specifically selected to allow learners to experience what it is like to work in the public services sector. We also invite guest speakers from the public services sector to come in and present. Learners have the opportunity to work with the public services sector and the local community as well as participating in events with local services.

Work experience

All learners will undertake a period of work experience that must be industry-related and should enhance the progression opportunities of the learner, by demonstrating their willingness to be involved in, and a greater understanding of, the public services sector.

Additional qualifications

As part of the study programme, learners may have the opportunity to undertake additional qualifications related to a career in the public services sector.

What do I need to join?

Applicants must have studied at GCSE level and achieved 5 grade 4 (grade C) GCSEs or above, inclusive of Maths, English Language and PE, as well as demonstrating (at interview and a College Taster day) an enthusiasm for the industry and a keen motivation to learn

How will I learn?

Sessions will be a mixture of theory and practical lessons, and, wherever possible, underpinning theory will also be demonstrated in a practical context. There will be a variety of assessment methods used (such as written assessments, observations, presentations and discussions), and learners will gain a thorough understanding of the evidence they are expected to produce.

How will I know how I am doing?

Learners will be assigned a personal tutor, who, alongside other delivery staff on the programme, will monitor progress on the course in relation to work submission, attendance, behaviour and punctuality as well as progress against a learner's individual targets.

Are there any extra costs?

Learners will be charged a materials fees, which will be used to purchase resources for the learners to use on the course. Any additional education trips will be priced individually during the course.

What can I do next?

Learners who successfully complete this qualification can progress into higher education. Alternatively, learners may progress into employment within the sector.

What are my career options?

There are many jobs in the uniformed public services open to learners upon completion of this programme.
