Summary

This exciting 1 year course will appeal to students who have an interest in creativity and in the world of the Creative Arts. It is aimed at engaging students seeking practical study but who might need to build confidence or rediscover their enjoyment in education before progressing onto employment or higher level courses. The Level 1 Diploma in Art and Design is designed to provide an opportunity to inspire, explore, develop and test creativity. This course will cover a broad range of arts subjects in both 2D and 3D. The 1 year project-based course encourages independence and builds confidence in those who prefer a practical approach to study.

What will I study?

The course comprises seven units covering a variety of experimentation in:

  • Drawing
  • Photography
  • Ceramics, transfers and glazing
  • Model-making
  • Fine art installation
  • Painting
  • Textiles and surface pattern
  • Print-making
  • Plaster work and casting
  • Interior design
  • Planning, evaluation and developing final pieces at a professional level
  • Planning and selling of your own work
  • Live projects engaging with the community
  • Discussions about society, progression and well-being
  • How to become more employable

The course culminates in the final major project at the end of the summer term, where the work will be displayed in a public exhibition

Maths & English

A key requirement to obtaining many jobs is achieving a good standard of English and Maths, therefore learners that do not yet have a GCSE grade 4 (grade C) will be enrolled on either GCSE or in Functional Skills programmes alongside their main course.

Employability

By developing the creative mind and developing interpersonal skills, this course makes learners more employable in every sector as well as the creative industries. The course focuses on developing learners resilience and passion, making art and design a transferrable skills base to take into any future employment.

Work experience

Students are directed and supported to seek opportunities relevant to their specialism to experience the work environment, whether this is a live project set by industry, creative competitions or working for a local or national company.

What do I need to join?

A portfolio of work to present at interview. Additionally, learners should be punctual and committed to work. To be open to new ideas. No qualifications are necessary for this course, although enthusiasm is a must!

How long is the course?

The course will last 1 year, involving up to 4 days a week at college. You also need to be prepared to undertake independent study.

How will I learn?

You will be shown how to research and develop your ideas creatively, watch demonstrations and discuss topics with your tutors at all times. You will be guided in the research and planning of projects and will be able to access specialist facilities. You will record and develop ideas in sketchbooks, which will also be used to contribute to the learning process.

How will I know how I am doing?

Project work is set with structured achievable targets that are organised around practical assessment.

You will also discuss project work through group critiques with verbal feedback from tutors and peers. Regular tutorials and reviews will take place with your personal tutor to discuss targets and progress.

Are there any extra costs?

There may be costs for material fees, educational visits and trips. Financial support may be available in certain circumstances.

What can I do next?

If you would like to continue your studies you can progress onto the Level 2 Diploma in Art & Design or Level 2 Diploma in Games Design. It is also possible to change subjects into other level 2 courses.

What are my career options?

Many students have progressed from level 1 up through the levels then gone to university and been employed in well paid jobs or started up successful businesses. A career in art is diverse and can include careers in graphic design, illustration, website design, teaching, museum studies and curating, set design, youth work, art therapy and photography as well as work in the ceramics, textiles, fashion industries. The skills and confidence gained on this course will help you find what direction you want to go in, and how to get there.

Tuition Fees

Between the ages of 16-18 you do not need to pay tuition or exam fees for your course. If you are between the ages of 19 and 23 and have not achieved a full Level 2 or Level 3 qualification before, you will not need to pay tuition, exam or material fees using the Level 2 or 3 Entitlement. If you are aged 19 or over, studying a Level 3-6 and a Level 3 Entitlement does not apply, you will need to pay the full cost of the course.
