Level 3 Diploma/Extended Production Arts (Technical Theatre)

Full time course

Summary

This inspiring vocational course is designed and taught at industry level as a working production company, known as Five Valleys Productions. This gives students who are aspiring to a career in the Performing Arts a first-hand experience of what life is like working in the industry. This programme takes learning out of the classroom and into the community, with projects ranging from storytelling to filmmaking, podcasts to practitioners and everything in between.

What will I study?

The units taught on this course include:

  • Production workshops
  • Production arts planning
  • Performing arts business
  • Stage management
  • Lighting design and operations
  • Sound operations
  • Scenic construction and design for stage
  • Stage technical maintenance.

In the first year, learners will complete the Blevel 3 Diploma based on portfolio and practical work. If they are successful they will proceed to the second year of study to extend the Diploma to the equivalent of three A Levels. The College runs its own schedule of in-house performances, which means that technicians on this course get the chance to work on dance, musical theatre, acting and performance arts productions. Work experience at local venues is also offered.

Maths & English

A key requirement to obtaining many jobs is achieving a good standard of English and Maths. Therefore, learners that do not yet have a GCSE grade 4 (grade C) will be enrolled on either GCSE or Functional Skills programmes alongside their main course.

Employability

The performing arts and leisure industry is one of the few areas in the jobs market that has sustained levels of employment and even shown areas of growth in the present economic climate.

What do I need to join?

Four GCSEs at grade 4 (grade C), including English and maths. Applicants without these qualifications can still apply if they have relevant experience or skills.

How long is the course?

2 years.

How will I learn?

Through a range of technical skill workshops and working on productions. This is accompanied with demonstrations from our professional technicians and guidance from your tutor.

How will I know how I am doing?

Your tutors will closely monitor and guide you through the course to ensure you reach your potential. You will have personal one-to-one tutorials to review progress regularly. You will also be given feedback from all of the directors you work with and other students on your course.

Are there any extra costs?

There is a materials fee payable, which will go towards the cost of equipment. You will need to purchase a set of basic workshop tools.

What can I do next?

You will leave this course with a very broad knowledge of the production industries. This may lead you in to a higher level of education or a job with a professional theatre, events management company, technical theatre supply company or as a freelance specialist.

Tuition Fees

Between the ages of 16-18 you do not need to pay tuition or exam fees for your course. If you are between the ages of 19 and 23 and have not achieved a full Level 2 or Level 3 qualification before, you will not need to pay tuition, exam or material fees using the Level 2 or 3 Entitlement. If you are aged 19 or over, studying a Level 3-6 and a Level 3 Entitlement does not apply, you will need to pay the full cost of the course.
