Level 2 Bench Joinery

Course summary

This Level 2 programme provides learners with the skills, knowledge and experience needed to carry out a range of joinery work to the standards agreed by the leading industry bodies. This qualification will enable you to gain a good overall understanding of the wood trade, while also providing you with industry-recognised skills and qualification, ensuring that you complete the course with a good grounding for future career development

What will I study?

  • Safe Working Practices
  • Information, Quantities and Communicating
  • Building Methods and Construction Technology
  • Safe Use of Woodworking Machinery
  • Setting out Joinery
  • Manufacture Joinery Products

Maths and English:

Those that haven’t achieved Grade C or above in Maths and English will be given additional support to improve these skills.


In conjunction with obtaining a trade qualification and practical experience learners will also develop other skills such as interview techniques and CV preparation to prepare them for the world of work.

Work Experience:

All courses include opportunities for learners to experience working in a construction environment. This gives the learner the opportunity to develop their skills in their chosen trade and assisit with progression choices.

What do I need to join?

You will have four GCSEs at grade 3 (D) or above, including English and maths. Ideally, candidates will have completed the Level 1 Diploma or can demonstrate knowledge of the trade and complete a skills assessment. 

How long is the course?

1 year with attendance 2.5 days a week.

How will I learn?

Practical experience will be gained in the workshop, through practical activities and assessments and underpinning knowledge will be delivererd in the classroom and IT suite where study will be interactive and informative.

How will I know how I am doing?

Targets will be set and agreed with your tutor and you will receive regular feedback and one to one reviews with your tutor to ensure that you are on track to achieve your goals.

What can I do next?

After successful completion, you can progress to Level 3 Bench Joinery. Alternatively, entry to an apprenticeship can be gained if suitable employment is found.

What are my career opportunities?

There are many different specialist roles within the industry. Employers will be looking for a minimum of level 2 NVQ or an apprenticeship at an equivalent level.

This course provides an excellent foundation upon which to build a career within the construction industry.

Tuition Fees

Between the ages of 16-18 you do not need to pay tuition or exam fees for your course. If you are between the ages of 19 and 23 and have not achieved a full Level 2 or Level 3 qualification before, you will not need to pay tuition, exam or material fees using the Level 2 or 3 Entitlement. If you are aged 19 or over, studying a Level 3-6 and a Level 3 Entitlement does not apply, you will need to pay the full cost of the course. You may be eligible for an Advanced Learner Loan to help with the fees. Please contact the College directly for the most up to date fees – these may be subject to change.
