This qualification at SGS provides an opportunity for learners to enter the exciting world of Counter Cosmetic Consultancy. This intermediate qualification provides an essential foundation for any aspiring make-up artists and offers a wide range of skills that are essential in the industry. The qualification offers a variety of professional standard skills to ensure a successful career in today’s competitive industry. The skills and knowledge gained can lead learners to careers in the cosmetics industry, aimed specifically for counter specialism. It is also an option to continue in freelance make-up work, for example, bridal and special occasions.
What will I study?
Modules covered include professional make-up application with complementary units in facial treatments, Instructing make-up and product application. Anatomy and Physiology for consultants. Essential Health, safety and hygiene processes, Effective customer service skills to include client consultation and record keeping. Retailing, displaying and processing payments for make-up, cosmetics and perfumery products for a retail environment.
Maths and English:
A key requirement to obtaining many jobs means achieving a good standard of English and Maths, therefore learners that do not yet have a GCSE grade 4 (C equivalent) in Maths will be enrolled on either GCSE or Functional Skills programmes alongside their course.
Your tutor will discuss this with you. It is a compulsory requirement that all learners will undertake an amount of work experience within the industry, in order to pass the course.
At an extra cost, there may be opportunities to increase your skills by undertaking additional qualifications relevant to the industry. Your tutor will inform you of these opportunities throughout your programme.
You will be able to gain employment in the cosmetic industry or undertake freelance make-up work. It is also possible to join the media industry as a Junior Make-Up Artist. Progressing to a Level 3 qualification will enhance your skills to gain work in the make-up industry.
What do I need to join?
You will have three GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English. You should possess a smart, professional appearance and have a genuine interest in the make-up industry. You should be able to supply a positive reference and complete a basic skills interview.
How long is the course?
This course lasts for 1 year, attending approximately 3 days per week.
How will I learn?
You will have a mixture of practical sessions in the studio providing experience in a realistic, professional work environment and classroom based lessons teaching underpinning knowledge. Optional trips will also be available to enhance learning.
How will I know how I am doing?
You will be assessed through observation of practical assessments, written projects and examinations. Experienced tutors will closely monitor and guide you through techniques to ensure you are meeting and exceeding industry standards. You will have personal one-to-one tutorials to review your progress regularly.
Are there any extra costs?
You will be required to purchase a uniform and kit which will cover the duration of your course and a materials cost upon enrolment. There may also be extra charges for trips.
What can I do next?
Upon successful completion of this qualification, learners who meet the required progression criteria can progress onto a Level 3 qualification at SGS. By progressing to the Level 3 Diploma in Theatrical and Media Make-up qualification learners will gain further experience and skills that are required to work in the industry.
