Level 2 Barbering
Full time course
This Level 2 qualification provides the fundamental level of skill that is required by a barber. You will carry out a host of tasks in our modern up-to-date salons using state-of-the-art equipment. At SGS College, we also give you the opportunity to take part in exciting and varied enrichment activities alongside your main qualification, which may include trips to hair shows, exciting fundraising events and competitions.
What will I study?
Modules covered may include drying and finishing men’s hair, cutting men’s hair, facial hair cutting techniques and outlines and detailing in hair.
Maths and English
You will be given the opportunity to improve and advance your skills in both Maths and English enabling you to progress in your studies or career. For students who have a GCSE grade 3 (grade D) or below in Maths, you will have the opportunity to improve and achieve a grade 4 (grade C). You will study at a level suited to your knowledge and understanding.
Your tutor will discuss this with you. It's expected that all learners will undertake work experience within the industry.
You will be able to work as a junior stylist within a salon whilst working towards your Level 3 qualification.
What do I need to join?
You will have three GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English. You should have excellent personal appearance and a high level of hygiene. You must be enthusiastic and have a genuine interest in barbering. You will also need to have suitable tutor/school references and a skills check. Alternatively, you will need a Level 1 Hair and Beauty qualification with suitable references from your tutor and have at least 90% attendance.

How will I learn?
You will have a mixture of practical sessions in the salon and classroom-based lessons teaching underpinning knowledge. You will be expected to perform demonstrations on models, other students and, once you are at a specific standard and ability, paying clients of the salon. It is expected that you will bring in your own clients for practical assessments. Optional trips will also be available to enhance learning.
How will I know how I am doing?
You will be assessed through observation of practical assessments, assignments and examinations at different points in the year. The final assessment will occur as a synoptic test of a range of treatments within a given time limit. Experienced tutors will closely monitor and guide you through techniques to ensure you are meeting and exceeding industry standards. You will have personal one-to-one tutorials to review your progress regularly.
Are there any extra costs?
Material fees will be due at enrolment. There will be extra costs for uniform, kit and optional trips. As previously mentioned, there may be costs for any additional courses you choose to do.
What can I do next?
On completion, you will have the skills and confidence to progress into employment or continued learning, such as an apprenticeship or a Level 3 qualification in Barbering. Employment options include junior stylist, colour technician or working in a hairdressing salon or barbershop.
