Level 1 Hair and Beauty
Full time course
This foundation level qualification is an exciting taster, combining hairdressing and beauty therapy for learners who are interested in both sectors. Alongside your core qualification, you will be given the opportunity to improve your grades by taking a Functional Skill GSCEs in English and maths, enabling you to progress on to further courses. You will study at a level suited to your knowledge and understanding.
What will I study?
Modules covered will include shampoo and conditioning hair, blow drying hair, skin care and nail care, with a strong influence on developing confidence and customer service skills.
Maths and English
Alongside your core qualification, you will be given the opportunity to improve your grades by taking English and Maths Functional Skills, enabling you to progress on to further courses. You will study at a level suited to your knowledge and understanding.
Your tutor will discuss this with you. It's expected that all learners undertake work experience within the industry.
Learners will perform a variety of tasks and projects to prepare the learner for progression into further study or employment.
What do I need to join?
You will need two GCSEs at grade 2/3 in Maths and English. You should have excellent personal appearance and a high level of hygiene. You must be enthusiastic and have a genuine interest in the hair and beauty sector. You should be a team player, as you will have to work closely with a number of colleagues.
How long is the course?
1 year, and requires attending college approximately 3 days per week.
How will I learn?
Hair and Beauty Therapy is a practical vocation, so the majority of your learning will take place in the salons undertaking practical assessments. You will also take part in theory sessions to build portfolios, which will include the photographic evidence and work you create relating to each unit.
How will I know how I am doing?
Tutors will closely monitor and guide you through techniques to ensure you are meeting and exceeding industry standards. You will have personal one-to-one tutorials to review progress regularly.
Are there any extra costs?
Material fees will be due at enrolment. There will be extra costs for uniform, kit and optional trips. As previously mentioned, there may be costs for any additional courses you choose to do.
What can I do next?
On completion of this study programme and with a reference from your course tutor, it is possible to progress onto our Level 2 courses. We offer qualifications in hair and make-up artistry, hairdressing and beauty therapy.
What are my career options?
After completing this level 1 qualification, you could go into employment as an apprentice beauty consultant or hair technician, working within a salon. Further career options depend on the route you take at levels 2 and 3, including: hair technician, beauty consultant, salon stylist/therapist, freelance hair and make-up artist, complementary therapies practice, mobile spa/hairdresser, cruise liners, hospice/care home work.
