Course Detail

Level 2 Hairdressing

Full time course

This Level 2 qualification provides the fundamental skills that are required by a hairdresser. You will carry out a host of different tasks in our modern, up-to-date salons using our own state-of-the-art equipment. As well as undertaking tasks in our salons, and some classroom-based learning, your qualification may also include trips to hair shows, competitions and visits by current practitioners.

What will I study?

Modules covered may include cutting, shampooing, styling, colouring, promotion marketing and sales and working in a salon environment.

Maths and English

You will be given the opportunity to improve and advance your skills in both Maths and English enabling you to progress in your studies or career. For students who have a GCSE grade 3 (grade D) or below in Maths, you will have the opportunity to improve and achieve a grade 4 (grade C). You will study at a level suited to your knowledge and understanding.

Work experience

Your tutor will discuss this with you. It's expected that all learners will undertake work experience within the industry.

You will be able to work as a Junior Stylist within a salon whilst working towards your level 3 qualification.

What do I need to join?

You will need three GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English. You should have the excellent personal and professional appearance that is required in the industry, and have a keen interest to work in hairdressing. You should be able to provide positive references and successfully complete a skills assessment.

How long is the course?

1 year.

How will I learn?

You will have a mixture of practical sessions in the salon and classroom-based lessons teaching the underpinning knowledge. You will be expected to perform demonstrations on models, other students and, once you are at a specific standard and ability, paying clients of the salon. It is expected that you will bring in your own clients for practical assessments. Optional trips will also be available to enhance learning.

How will I know how I am doing?

You will be assessed through observation of practical assessments, assignments and examinations at different points in the year. The final assessment will occur as a synoptic test of a range of treatments within a given time limit. Experienced tutors will closely monitor and guide you through techniques to ensure you are meeting and exceeding industry standards. You will have personal one-to-one tutorials to review your progress regularly.

Are there any extra costs?

Material fees will be due at enrolment. There will be extra costs for uniform, kit and optional trips. As previously mentioned, there may be costs for any additional courses you choose to do.

What can I do next?

Upon successful completion of this qualification, learners will possess the necessary skills required to progress into employment or continue with further training, either through moving to a Level 3 qualification at SGS or an apprenticeship.
