About this course
Colour and Light, there is nothing quite like the purity and luminosity of transmitted light through coloured glass. On this full week workshop you can learn about different types of glass and play with colour and transparency.
You will be able to create a piece of stained glass and interpret your ideas in beautiful coloured glass to make a leaded size panel (A3 size).
You can also use techniques of kiln fired glass paints, stains and enamels and glass fusing in our new flat-bed Glass Kiln.
This is an ideal course for beginners to stained glass and continuing students can develop their skills and try new techniques All welcome.

Tutor will give demonstration and one to one support.
What will I learn?
Beginners will be taken through a structured course, step by step, to include all stages essential in making leaded stained glass panel (A3 size ). This will cover design, cut line drawings, selecting and cutting from a beautiful range of coloured glass, leading, soldering cementing and finishing techniques. You can experiment with kiln fired glass painting and fusing.
Continuing students can develop their design and craft skills as well as try out new techniques e.g. Glass Fusing - frits, inclusions, slumping and high firing paints/enamels. Copper foil technique, Kiln Fired glass painting tracing and shading paints/ silver stain/ lower firing enamels.
How will I know how I am doing?
The tutor will help you and check your work to make sure you are progressing well.
Do I receive a qualification?
What should I bring?
A notebook and sturdy shoes (no open toe sandals). Any designs and doodles that you may want to develop to discuss with the tutor.

Beginners on Friday afternoon 1- 3.30pm Stratford Road campus
All levels, a new Thursday morning class 9.30 – 12.00, enrol for a term or this also offers an accreditation option of the AIM Award L1 over 2 terms, this runs at the same time at the Stratford Road campus
All Levels Thursday evening class 6.30 – 9pm off site at the Star Centre, Brimscombe.
For those with more experience there is also an Advanced /Intermediate glass class running on Friday mornings 9am-12pm in college which also offers accreditation options L2 Aim Award and L1 Certificate.
Are there any extra costs?
Your fee includes the finest materials to make a panel approximately A3 size. If you want to make larger work you may choose to buy some additional materials from a supplier or the tutor. The workshop is suitable to make domestic rather than architectural scale work.
About the tutor
RUTH ADAMS has taught Fired Stained Glass Painting at Central Saint Martins where she previously completed her postgraduate studies in glass with Distinction. She taught stained glass for 10 years at The City Literary Institute in Central London. Ruth relocated to Stroud where she works as a practicing artist and set up the glass department within the Arts School at Stroud campus. She is a respected educator within this field with an enormous amount of experience and enthusiasm to help you engage with this fantastic subject.

AIM Awards Level 2 Award in Skills for Working in Creative and Design Industries 603/1729/2 is available in the Friday morning Advanced /Intermediate class over 20 weeks
AIM Awards Level 1 Certificate in Skills for Working in Creative and Design Industries 603/1726/7 is planned for delivery over 30 weeks Friday morning in 18/19 academic year.
