Part time course
This is a qualification with a value of 12 credits, comprising the following 3 units which are awarded at level 3:
Unit 301 Understanding roles, responsibilities and relationships in education and training
Unit 302 Understanding and using inclusive teaching and learning approaches in education and training
Unit 305 Understanding assessment in education and training
Understanding the principles and practice of assessment (TAQA unit 301)
The qualification is designed to enable candidates to:
Adopt an integrated approach to the theory and practice of teaching.
Reflect on their own previous/current levels of experience, practice and skills, and areas for development.
Identify principles of learning, teaching, assessment and evaluation.
Develop confidence, communication and inter-personal skills.
Develop an awareness of their professional role and responsibilities.
Level 3 learning includes:
Knowledge of relevant principles, and where appropriate theories, that apply in this field.
Evidence of appropriate reading relating to principles, theories and practice.
Consideration of how professional values impact on working in this area.
Credits from the AET count towards both the Certificate in Education and Training and the Diploma in Education and Training.
The qualification has a value of 12 credits (120 hours) on the Qualification and Credit Framework (QCF).
The class size is a maximum of 16 to allow for individual attention.
Participants are expected to do a substantial amount of self-study (minimum of 30 hours ). Course participants are expected to attend the whole course, and must attend for a minimum of 80% of course time.

How will the course be delivered
The course is taught using a variety of methods, including group activities, short lectures and home study tasks. The AET is assessed by assignments, both theory and practical. To achieve the qualification, candidates must successfully complete all assignments. Assignments will be graded PASS or REFER. Candidates must complete a reflective learning journal entry after each session attended and hand them in regularly throughout the AET programme. Finally, candidates will be required to plan and deliver a 15 minute micro-teach.
Is previous experience is necessary?
This qualification is not approved for anyone under 19 years old.
Although there are no formal entry requirements for this qualification, candidates must be considering a subject for delivery and be aiming to achieve / or have achieved a qualification and/or have experience in their subject/skill at the appropriate level.
In addition, the nature of both the learning and assessment required for the qualification is such that candidates should have the ability to manage the requirements of the level of the qualification they are taking, read and interpret written tasks, and write answers in a legible and understandable form. Candidates will also need to be able to organise written information clearly and coherently.
The qualification is for candidates who work, or want to work as teachers/ trainers in the further education and skills sector; for candidates who are not in a teaching/training role, or who have just started a teaching/ training role; for candidates who want a short qualification to enable them to make career choices.
What can I do next?
AET provides progression to the City & Guilds Certificate in Education and Training (CET) or the City & Guilds Diploma in Education and Training (DET) for those seeking 'Full Teacher' QTLS status.
