Course Detail

Level 3 90 Credit Diploma Animal Management

Full time course

Summary

This one-year study programme is aimed at providing learners with the underpinning knowledge and skills required to work in the animal industry or a sound base from which to progress to year 2 of a Level 3 study programme and tp provide an A Level equivalent qualification.

What will I study?

The BTEC units required to achieve the Level 3, 90 Credit Diploma BTEC include modules such as Animal Biology, Animal Health and Husbandry, Work-related Experience and Breed Development and Welfare as well as Animal Feeding and Accommodation.

Maths and English

As part of the ethos of up skilling our learners, opportunities to improve their Maths and English will be identified in lessons and throughout the course.

Work experience

Learners will undertake a work placement of 30 hours (minimum) that needs to be industry-related and related to their long-term career goals.

Employability

Lessons are related to industry practice in order to enhance employability opportunities and will study an industry-related additional qualification as part of the study programme.

What do I need to join?

Prospective learners need to possess 5 GCSEs at grade 4 (grade C) or above, including Maths, English Language and Double Science and display an enthusiasm for the Industry, as well as being successful at interview and they must also attend a college Taster day.

How long is the course?

1 year

How will I learn?

Lessons will be a mixture of theory and practical sessions; the practical sessions include work with our own on-site animal collection and, wherever possible, will make use of our external partnerships. Learners will be assessed by a variety of methods including the completion of a diary, written assignments, observations and presentations.

How will I know how I am doing?

Learners will discuss their own SMART targets with their personal tutor and these will then be specifically designed to enable learners to progress to a 'top-up' Level 3 course. In order to review progress, learners will meet regularly with their personal tutor and feedback on assessments will be provided by teaching staff.

Are there any extra costs?

Learners will be charged materials fees, which will be used to purchase resources for the learners to use on the course (inclusive of PPE), to facilitate educational study visits and to support the learning taking place.

What can I do next?

Learners will be challenged to progress to the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Animal Management qualification after successful completion of this course. Progression could be to an HNC/HND in Animal Welfare, HNC/HND Conservation and Fdsc Zoological Management through the University of Gloucestershire.

What are my career options?

Learners can find employment in kennels, catteries, pet stores, wildlife parks, dog grooming salons and zoological institutions. We would advise all learners to try and secure additional voluntary work in one of these areas alongside their work placement as this could provide enhanced opportunities for employment upon course completion.
