Passport to Independence – Independent Living and Employability

Full time course


This is a course for young people aged 18–24 with additional learning needs. Learners progress to this course within the department from other Foundation programmes.

The main aim of the qualification is to develop self-confidence, with an emphasis on physical and emotional development, independent living and employment, to prepare learners for leaving college. This programme helps learners achieve a smooth transition from college to the next step in their adult life, whether this be employment or independent living in the community.

What will I study?

Learners will undertake skills to support them becoming independent adults. Learners will study independent cooking skills, explore opportunities for work and independence and improve literacy and numeracy.

Maths and English

Literacy and numeracy will be embedded throughout the course and learners will have the opportunity to upskill in these areas.

Work experience

Learners will take part in voluntary/community work placements and experience.


Learners will undertake essential skills and learn how to work as part of a team as well as independently; these are essential skills that employers look for.

How long is the course?

1 year.

How will I learn?

Learners will work in small groups with a qualified member of staff and a support worker, according to individual needs. Learners are assessed as to their requirements prior to starting and on course, in order to ensure they are placed in the group that is right for them.

How will I know how I am doing?

Learners will meet with their personal tutor on a regular basis in order to review progress and agree targets so that progress can be measured and learners challenged to achieve their best.

Are there any extra costs?

A materials fee of £250.

Learners can progress on to other courses that help develop skills and aid towards long-term goals, including supported internships.

Tuition Fees

Between the ages of 16-18 you do not need to pay tuition or exam fees for your course. If you are between the ages of 19 and 23 and have not achieved a full Level 2 or Level 3 qualification before, you will not need to pay tuition, exam or material fees using the Level 2 or 3 Entitlement. If you are aged 19 or over, studying a Level 3-6 and a Level 3 Entitlement does not apply, you will need to pay the full cost of the course. You may be eligible for an Advanced Learner Loan to help with the fees. Please contact the College directly for the most up to date fees – these may be subject to change.
