About this course

This course is specifically for those who want to start out in the hospitality industry. You may want to work as a chef, kitchen assistant, waitress or hotel receptionist. This introductory course provides you with a number of essential skills, including food hygiene, preparation and cooking as well as wider customer service skills. Students will be assessed through a variety of practical and written assessments, both of which will enable you to build important employability skills.

What will I study?

  • Know about safe working practices in the catering industry
  • Know how to work as a team in hospitality
  • Know how to prepare food
  • Know how to cook food
  • Maintain food safety when storing, holding and serving food
  • Communicate in a business environment
  • Exploring job opportunities

What will I do next?

This course provides a solid foundation upon which to further develop your skills and knowledge of the catering industry. Students will normally proceed to the L2 course and then specialise in a Level 3 Diploma.

How will I be assessed?

  • Students will be assessed through practical assessments and assignment work. There are no formal exams
  • Alongside your catering qualification you will need to take Functional Skills English and Maths, enrichment, work experience and group / 121 tutorials. This study programme is designed to help you secure employment and to develop important employability skills like problem solving, team work and customer service.

Entry requirements

You will need two GCSEs at grade 2 in English and maths. A good working knowledge of catering and hospital are also required.

Tuition Fees

Between the ages of 16-18 you do not need to pay tuition or exam fees for your course. If you are between the ages of 19 and 23 and have not achieved a full Level 2 or Level 3 qualification before, you will not need to pay tuition, exam or material fees using the Level 2 or 3 Entitlement. If you are aged 19 or over, studying a Level 3-6 and a Level 3 Entitlement does not apply, you will need to pay the full cost of the course. You may be eligible for an Advanced Learner Loan to help with the fees. Please contact the College directly for the most up to date fees – these may be subject to change.
