Level 1 Introductory in Hospitality

Full time course


This level 1 qualification is a Hospitality and Tourism Course where students will learn about a range of Hospitality subjects including Preparing and Cooking Food, Running a Hospitality and Tourism Event and Delivering Customer Service. You will also study subjects such as Using Websites to Make Holiday Choices and Exploring Visitor Attractions and Travel and Tourism in the UK. You will learn English and Maths as part of your Study Programme. You will gain a broad understanding of the jobs available and how to gain employment. You will also go on a wide range of trips to support your learning which may include Thorpe Park, Paintballing, Airhop, Cadbury Factory and Ice Skating.

What will I study?

You will study a range of subjects to give you an insight into the industry, including:

  • Planning an Event
  • How to be a Holiday Rep
  • Working in a Team
  • Plan a Trip to a Visitor Attraction
  • Customer Service
  • Maths and English

A key requirement to obtaining many jobs is achieving a good standard of English and Maths. Therefore, learners that do not yet have a GCSE grade C will be enrolled on either GCSE or Functional Skills programmes alongside their main study programme.

Work experience

All students take part in a week's work experience within the travel and tourism industry. We encourage and provide support to those who wish to gain experience in the world of travel and tourism; past placements have included a weeks residential in a hotel in Devon, working in a Bristol City Centre Hotel and a week in a city centre transport organisation.


During your time on this course, you will develop the skills that employers are really looking for, such as communication, numeracy, presentation skills, analysis, interpretation, application and the evaluation of information.

What do I need to join?

Pre entry requirements are an interest in the industry and satisfactory interview and references.

How long is the course?

1 year course. On completion, you will receive a level 1 qualification in Hospitality and Tourism along with any additional qualifications taken.

How will I learn?

A variety of teaching styles and methods are used to cater for individual's styles. Assessment is in the form of coursework which can include posters, presentations, written work and practical asessments.

How will I know how I am doing?

Your tutor will give regular feedback so that you can see how you are progressing through the course and what level you are currently working at. Our expert tutors are always on hand to assist you and help you achieve the grades you want. Extra support is given to those with specific needs.

Are there any extra costs?

Materials fees (non-refundable) and trips – these can be paid for in instalments.

What can I do next?

This qualification will prepare you for further learning at a higher level, for example, you can progress on to a Level 2 Travel and Tourism Study Programme or alternatively choose another Level 2 course across college. Learners could also progress onto a Level 2 Apprenticeship.

What are my career options?

There are a wide range of jobs in the travel and tourism or hospitality industries and this course will more than prepare you for those jobs. However, you may also wish to consider an apprenticeship or employment in a different field as many of the skills you learn are transferable to other sectors too.

Tuition Fees

Between the ages of 16-18 you do not need to pay tuition or exam fees for your course. If you are between the ages of 19 and 23 and have not achieved a full Level 2 or Level 3 qualification before, you will not need to pay tuition, exam or material fees using the Level 2 or 3 Entitlement. If you are aged 19 or over, studying a Level 3-6 and a Level 3 Entitlement does not apply, you will need to pay the full cost of the course. You may be eligible for an Advanced Learner Loan to help with the fees. Please contact the College directly for the most up to date fees – these may be subject to change.
