Course Detail

Access to Higher Education Land-based Studies Pathway (Animal Management and Conservation)

Full time course

Summary

This course is ideal for students aiming to work with animals or study land-based management and conservation at a higher Level 3. The course is aimed at learners who do not have formal qualifications of the level to enter into higher education and functions as the perfect stepping stone for a land-based career. The course is especially designed for adults who have had a break from studying and is accepted by universities as an alternative to A-levels.

What will I study?

The course content will include units of study such as Animal Health, Welfare and Behaviour, Biology and Ecology, as well as academic study skills to improve learners' ability to succeed on this course.

Maths and English

As part of the ethos of upskilling our learners, opportunities to improve their Maths and English will be identified in lessons and throughout the course.

Work experience

Learners will undertake one day per week work experience for the duration of their study programme. Learners will be expected to secure an industry-related placement when starting the course.

Employability

Learners will undertake work experience and lessons will be related to industry practice in order to enhance employability opportunities.

How long is the course?

1 year.

How will I learn?

Lessons will be a mixture of theory and practical sessions; the practical sessions include work within our own on-site animal collection and will, wherever possible, make use of our partnership with Bristol Zoo Gardens and other venues.

What do I need to join?

You will need two GCSEs at grade 5 in English and maths, and will need to sit an entrance test. Specialist pathways may require higher grades: these will be discussed as part of your interview for the course.

How will I know how I am doing?

Learners will discuss their own targets with their personal tutor and targets will then be specially designed to enable learners to progress to other courses. In order to review progress, learners will meet regularly with their personal tutor and feedback on assessments will be provided by teaching staff.

Are there any extra costs?

Alongside the fee for the course, material fees will be required at enrolment. Please note that financial support is available in certain circumstances, so please contact our Learner Services team to see what financial support may be available to you.

What can I do next?

Learners will be challenged to progress to higher education, particularly our foundation degree programmes. Support will be given to complete the UCAS application process.

What are my career options?

Learners can find employment with kennels, catteries, pet stores, wildlife parks, dog grooming salons and zoological institutions. We would advise all learners to try and secure additional voluntary work in one of these industries alongside their work placement as this could provide enhanced opportunities for employment upon course completion.
