Level 1 Early Years
Full time course
This qualification encourages an understanding of the knowledge and the skills needed to care for young children. There are also units to help with self-development.
What will I study?
The units you may study include:
Introduction to study skills
Growth and development of young children
Practical health and safety when working with young children
Time management skills
Craft activities with children
Sharing learning experiences with children
Stress and stress management techniques
Science activities for children
Healthy eating for children
Maths and English
A key requirement to obtaining many jobs is achieving a good standard of English and Maths, therefore learners that do not yet have a GCSE grade 4 (grade C) will be enrolled on either GCSE or Functional Skills programmes alongside their main course.
Nine days, comprising three days in each term.
We will be delivering a variety of tasks and projects to prepare you for becoming more employable when you complete this course.
What do I need to join?
You will need two GCSEs at grade 2 or above, in English and maths, be interested in working with children and be able to provide two positive references – one from school and one from an early years setting.
How long is the course?
How will I learn?
A range of teaching methods will be used in the classroom including: writing, reading, discussions, presentations and work products. There will also be opportunities to partake in activities outside of the classroom in relation to the course.
How will I know how I am doing?
You will receive one-to-one tutorials with your tutor. You will have feedback on your assessment and you will have informal feedback in lessons.
Are there any extra costs?
Learners will be charged material fees, which will be used to purchase resources for the course. You will need to apply for a Disclosure and Debarring Services (DBS) certificate for the safeguarding of children, which costs £44 (at the time of print) and that will need to be completed at a Taster day at the College, before enrolling on the course.
What can I do next?
Learners who successfully complete the qualification, and all other elements of their study programme, may progress to a Level 2 qualification at SGS. For progression in Early Years, your route will be dependent on grades achieved in English and maths.
What are my career options?
This is a foundation programme and these qualifications do not directly qualify you for work, but they do support you in preparing for your 'next steps' either in training or moving towards working in a childcare setting.
