Diploma in Education and Training Level 5

Part time course

What will I learn?

The Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training is a teaching qualification run over 2 academic years, which has a teaching/training practice requirement. It is an 'in service' qualification of 120 credits, designed for those working as teachers/trainers in England. All candidates must have access to 100 hours of teaching.

Candidates who successfully complete this qualification will take an analytical and practical approach to all aspects of planning, delivering and assessing inclusive teaching and learning. Whilst doing this, candidates will embed theories and principles in education and training and demonstrate them in their practice.

Candidates will also carry out research into professionalism in education and training policies and consider their impact on their role and their accountability as a teacher/trainer.

Candidates will also have the opportunity to contribute to quality improvement and quality assurance within their own organisation.

The qualification covers the knowledge and skills required by teachers/trainers in the further education and skills sector, such as:

  • Teaching, learning and assessment in education and training
  • Developing teaching learning and assessment in education and training
  • Theories, principles and models of education and training
  • Wider professional practice and development in education and training

The course comprises four elements:

  • Course time over 2 academic years (minimum 80% attendance required)
  • Substantial independent reading and research
  • Teaching practice portfolio of evidence
  • Course assignments

Candidates need to demonstrate in their assessments a depth of knowledge and understanding appropriate to levels 4 and 5 and an academic style of writing, with references to background reading.

How will the course be delivered?

Learning will take place through: lecture, classroom activities, group discussions, written assignments, micro teaches, research, reflection and evidence gathered from teaching practice. You will demonstrate what you have learned through both practical skills assessments and assignments that cover the theory of teaching. You will keep a teaching practice portfolio and a reflective learning journal. You will also complete 100 teaching practice hours which you must arrange yourself. You will be observed for a minimum of 8 hours during this teaching practice.

You will also need to arrange for someone in your workplace, who is a fully trained teacher and specialist in your subject area, to act as your mentor.

It is important that candidates recognise the time commitment at the start of the course and are prepared to manage study time with any other work and home life commitments in order to complete the qualification on time.

There is no credit transfer from the old PTLLS or CTLLS qualifications. Twenty credits can be transferred from the Certificate in Education and Training

Is previous experience necessary?

Candidates must be considering a subject for delivery and be aiming to achieve / or have achieved a qualification and/or have experience in their subject/skill at the appropriate level (usually level 3).

In addition, candidates should have the ability to manage the requirements of the level of the qualification they are taking, read and interpret written tasks, and write answers in a legible and understandable form. Candidates will also need to be able to organise written information clearly and coherently.

All candidates should undertake an initial assessment of skills in English, mathematics and ICT. They should record their development needs and, where applicable, agree an action plan to address them.

This qualification is not approved for under 19s.

What can I do next?

Having gained the Diploma you can apply for Qualified Teacher in Learning and Skills status (QTLS).
