Level 2 Animal Care
Full time course
This programme is aimed at providing learners with the underpinning knowledge and skills required to work in the animal care industry or to progress to further study.
What will I study?
Learners will study GCSE English and Maths as a key component of the programme in order to afford the opportunity to try and achieve a GCSE Grade 4 (grade C). As well as these BTEC units may include: Introduction to Animal Handling and Behaviour, Animal Nursing, and Introduction to the Care of Exotic Animals.
What do I need to join?
Learners should possess a minimum of 2 GCSEs at grade 3 (grade D) or above in English and Maths. Additionally, learners will need to be successful at interview and attend a college Taster day.

How will I learn?
Lessons will be a mixture of theory and practical sessions, the practical sessions include work within our own on-site animal collection.
How will I know how I am doing?
Learners will discuss their own SMART targets with their personal tutor and these will be specially designed to enabe learners to progress to other courses. In order to review progress, learners will meet regularly with their personal tutor and feedback on assessments will be provided by teaching staff.
Are there any extra costs?
Learners will be charged materials fees, which will be used to purchase resources to use on the course (inclusive of PPE), to facilitate educational study visits and to support the learning taking place.
What are my career options?
Learners will be challenged to progress to further Level 2 courses or top up to a full Level 2 Diploma after successful completion of this course. In order to qualify for progression, learners must have an attendance record of 90% or above as well as possess an exemplary record of work submission on time.
Learners should also achieve English/Maths to a minimum Level of Grade 2 in Functional skills. Learners can find themselves employed in kennels, catteries, pet stores, wildlife parks, dog grooming salons and working with zoological collections.
We would advise all learners to try and secure additional voluntary work in one of these fields alongside their work placement as this could provide enhanced opportunities for employment upon course completion.
