Course Detail

A Level Philosophy

Full time course

Philosophy considers such problems as: the nature of reality, the purpose of human existence, and the basis of knowledge. It also scrutinises the methods used to answer such questions. Those of you who enjoy discussions, debating, researching or communicating ideas will find that this course will suit you.

What will I study?

Philosophy is all about the love of wisdom, the critical examination of ideas about us and the world and the search for truth through reasoning, as well as examining how we decide whether humans' actions are right or wrong. Units covered include: The nature of knowledge (epistemology); Arguments for and against the existence of God; Different ethical systems; and Philosophy of the mind (a branch of metaphysics).

How long is the course?

2 years.

How will I learn?

Students are encouraged to research topics and present their ideas both in written and spoken form. In-class discussion will centre on the structure of arguments (hypotheses; premises; conclusions), their strengths and weaknesses, and counter-arguments. Students will be challenged to defend their positions on given topics and to consider how their opponents might justify their own positions. A supplementary philosophy club will be run in order to give students a chance to debate, ponder and evaluate in a more relaxed atmosphere outside of the syllabus.

How will I know how I am doing?

The course is assessed by examination.

Are there any extra costs?

You may be expected to purchase a text book.

What do I need to join?

To join the full time A Level Programme you need at least 5 full GCSEs grades 9–5 (A*–C), including English Language and Maths.
In addition for A Level Philosophy you need grade 9-5 in Religious Education.

What can I do next?

A qualification in Philosophy shows a range of abilities including: analysing and presenting information and expressing and questioning ideas and opinions.

It is offered to those who intend to go into higher education. There are a wide range of career opportunities available for those who have studied this course.
