Course Detail

A Level Media Studies

Full time course

Summary

Do you have an interest in how mass media affects most areas of society and contributes to our understanding of the world? If so, then this could be the course for you.

What will I study?

Year one of the course provides a solid and rigorous introduction to the key aspects of media study. All students will have an opportunity to undertake practical media work as part of their programme. Year two of the course further investigates media research and production, as well as examining theoretical perspectives for understanding how the mass media operates.

What do I need to join?

To join the full time A Level Programme you need at least 5 full GCSEs grades 9–5 (A*–C), including English Language and Maths.
In addition for A Level Media Studies you need grade 9-5 in GCSE Media or BTEC Media merit (if taken). We look for interest, enthusiasm and engagement and students who are prepared to analyse and not just describe events.

How long is the course?

2 years.

How will I learn?

You will develop your understanding of media texts through close analysis. The course will involve much discussion and some group work. There will be a significant amount of practical work, which will include the use of IT packages, video production and digital technologies.

How will I know how I am doing?

Tutors work closely with students to ensure they reach their full potential. The course is assessed by examination and coursework.

Are there any extra costs?

You may be expected to purchase a text book.

What can I do next?

Media Studies is a recognised qualification providing access to college and university study. It complements subjects such as English, Film Studies, Law, Psychology and Sociology.
