Course Detail

A Level Mathematics

Full time course

Summary

The Maths course is for those who love Maths and want to use it as a major part of their degree course. At its core is the development of a logical mind that prepares you for whatever you want to do in life.

What will I study?

Over the two year course, you will study Pure Maths, which looks at the theoretical side of Mathematics and develops your knowledge and understanding of algebra and geometry. Some of the topics will be familiar to you already, but other topics, e.g. calculus, will be completely new. Alongside these modules, you will also study Applied Maths modules (statistics and mechanics), which develops your knowledge from GCSE and introduces new topics about forces and how the universe works.

What do I need to join?

To join the full time A Level Programme you need at least 5 full GCSEs grades 9–5 (A*–C), including English Language and Maths.
In addition for A Level Maths you need grade 9-7 in Maths. Students with grade 6 will be required to pass an entrance test. Students who enjoyed their Mathematics at Key Stage 4 would be appropriate for this course.

How long is the course?

2 years.

How will I learn?

You will learn through a mixture of discussion and written work. Much of the learning will be supported with the use of ICT for modelling and graphical representations.

How will I know how I am doing?

The course is assessed through exam-based assessments.

Are there any extra costs?

You may be expected to purchase a text book.

What can I do next?

Maths is particularly recommended for those wishing to study Mathematics, Engineering, Physical Sciences or Computing at university but is accepted (alongside other subjects) as an appropriate qualification for entry to almost any career or degree course.
