Course Detail

A Level Politics

Full time course

Summary

Politics is the study of how we are governed. The course examines representative and direct democracy, how we elect MPs and form governments, how Parliament works, the role of the courts, political parties and the power of the Prime Minister. We also study concepts including freedom, justice, sovereignty and equality in both political ideologies and their application in policy. In Politics, we also debate many fundamental questions: What influences voting behaviour? What ideological differences are there between political parties? Should our society be more equal? Does the state intervene too much in our lives? It is a lively and infectious subject and you will need to keep up to date with the news and the political issues that affect us locally, nationally and internationally.

What will I study?

Politics is the study of how we are governed.

We primarily focus on UK democracy. The course examines representative and direct democracy, how we elect MPs and form governments, how Parliament works, the role of the courts, political parties and the power of the Prime Minister.

We also study concepts such as freedom, justice, sovereignty and equality in both political ideologies and their application in policy. In Politics, we also debate many fundamental questions: What influences voting behaviour? Should Parliament be reformed? What ideological differences are there both between political parties and within them? Does the prime minister have too much power? Should our society be more equal? Should there be greater or less individual freedom in society? Does this state intervene too much in our lives? Should there be more state control over the economy? It is a lively and infectious subject and you will need to keep up to date with the news and the political issues that affect us locally, nationally and internationally.

What do I need to join?

To join the full time A Level Programme you need at least 5 full GCSEs grades 9–5 (A*–C), including English Language and Maths.
In addition for A Level Politics you need to have a keen interest in current affairs and you must possess good writing skills.

How long is the course?

2 years.

How will I learn?

You will need to work effectively on your own, though we also provide regular opportunities for active learning. You will take part in group work and discussions. A lot of your work will involve collecting evidence, analysing arguments and applying ideas to contemporary British politics. Additionally, we also welcome guest speakers, participate in a seminar in the Politics Department at Cardiff University, and visit the Houses of Parliament.

How will I know how I am doing?

Tutors work closely with students to ensure they reach their full potential. Assessment is by exam only.

Are there any extra costs?

You may be expected to purchase a text book.

What can I do next?

Politics is highly regarded by both employers and in higher education. As well as Politics itself, it can lead to a variety of careers, including Research, Consultancy, Law, Journalism, Business, the Police, the Media, Teaching, Lecturing, and the Social Sciences.
