Summary

The study of economics is excellent preparation for those learners wishing to take a degree in economics or business. Economics looks at the choices that individuals, businesses and nations make in response to limited resources. It is a theoretical discipline that attempts to predict future market trends, analyse the relative merits of different types of market and advise governments and international bodies about the likely effects of their economic policies upon individuals, industries and the whole economy.

What will I study?

Economics looks at the choices individuals, businesses and nations make in response to limited resources. It is a theoretical discipline that attempts to predict future market trends, to analyse the relative merits of different types of market and to advise governments and international bodies about the likely effects of their economic policies upon individuals, industries and the whole economy. During the course, you will study both micro (small scale) and macro (global) economic systems. Topics covered include:

  • The operation of markets and market failure
  • The national economy in a global context
  • Individual, firms, markets and market failure
  • The national and international economies.

What do I need to join?

At least 5 full GCSEs grades 9–4 (A*–C), including English Language and Maths grade B/6 and English Language grade B/6. As Economics is likely to be a new subject to most learners, no prior knowledge is expected.

How long is the course?

2 years.

How will I learn?

We focus on active learning. You will take part in group work and presentations. A lot of your work will involve analysing case studies and on sharing ideas in discussion.

How will I know how I am doing?

Tutors work closely with learners to ensure they reach their full potential. Assessment is by exam only.

Are there any extra costs?

You may be expected to purchase a text book.

What do I need to join?

To join the full time A Level Programme you need at least 5 full GCSEs grades 9–5 (A*–C), including English Language and Maths.
In addition for A Level Business you will need Maths grade 9-6 and English Language grade 9-6.

If you are between the ages of 19 and 23 and have not achieved a full Level 2 or Level 3 qualification before, you will not need to pay tuition, exam or material fees using the Level 2 or 3 Entitlement.
