Course Detail

A Level Computer Science

Full time course

For this course, you should be a logical thinker who enjoys problem solving and has an interest in the theory of computing. The A-level course involves the study of computer science and will enable you to develop skills in coding, as well as understanding of areas including system development, computer architecture, data structures and communication via networks. In year two, a substantial programming project is undertaken. Computing is an academic course designed to develop your capacity to think analytically, logically and critically. You will learn through discussion, research, revision and problem-solving tasks.

What will I study?

This course promotes the integrated study of computer science. It will enable you to develop a broad range of skills in programming, system development, computer architecture, data, communication and applications. Component 1 investigates programs, data structures, algorithms, logic, programming methodologies and the impact of computer science on society. Component 2 investigates computer architecture, communication, data representation, organisation and structure of data, programs, algorithms and software applications. Component 3 is a project in which you discuss, investigate, design, prototype, refine and implement, test and evaluate a computerised solution to a problem chosen by the candidate, which must be solved using original code (programming). This is a substantial piece of work, and is undertaken over an extended period of time.

What do I need to join?

To join the full time A Level Programme you need at least 5 full GCSEs grades 9–5 (A*–C), including English Language and Maths.
In addition for A Level Computer Science you need grade 9-5 in Maths plus grade 9-6 in Computer Science or a subject assessment

How long is the course?

2 years.

How will I learn?

Computing is an academic course designed to develop students' capacity to think creatively, innovatively, analytically, logically and critically. You will learn through discussion, research, revision and problem-solving tasks. The project is guided by a teacher and is very hands-on.

How will I know how I am doing?

Components 1 and 2 are assessed through written examinations, whilst Component 3 requires you to investigate, design, prototype, implement, test and evaluate a computer solution to a substantial problem of your own choice.

Are there any extra costs?

You may be expected to purchase a text book

What can I do next?

Computing combines well with A Levels in Mathematics, Physics, Accounting or any other scientific/mathematical discipline. Progression to any university course with computing or software engineering in the title is possible, and computing is regarded favourably by universities as a 'difficult' subject which teaches higher level problem-solving skills.
